I'm working on the adagio of Bach's violin sonata no. 3 in C,
transcribed in F for viola. Can anyone help me out with the
fingering of the chord at bar 22? In the original key, the
voicing would be (from the bottom up):
A A C F
It seems that the low A requires you to be in first position,
with 1 fingering that note. Since you're in first position,
the only way to finger the C seems to be to play it on the
A string, which means I've got:
A=1 A=4 C=2
But then the only finger I've got left is 3, and it doesn't
seem anatomically possible to reach the high F with that.
I have a recording in which the violinist delays the top
note by half a beat. Is this the sensible way to play this?
It seems odd to delay the top note, since it's the continuation
of a melody line from the previous bar. But I guess you do want
the bass note to land on the downbeat.
TIA!
