I'm working on the fugue from Bach's violin sonata no. 3 in C
(transcribed for viola in F, Meyer-Vieland, International Music
Co.). This edition doesn't have bar numbers, so I'm hoping I didn't
miscount. At bar 145(ish), there are two voices. Transposed to the
original violin key, the top voice would be
B rest A rest
1/4 1/4 1/4 1/4
and the bottom
C Bb C D C.
Although there is a certain amount of chromaticism in the piece,
it seems odd to me that there'd be a B natural in the top voice,
followed immediately by a Bb in the bottom voice. The surrounding
bars also have Bb. The tonal center in this section seems to be
G minor. Anyone have any opinions about whether I'm right
in correcting the B to a Bb?
TIA!
Ben
