What Fritz is saying is exactly what I've been thinking for a long time.
I've gone ahead and put together some solo material I had on hand,
as "Anthology for Intermediate Strings:"
http://www.lightandmatter.com/music/strings/
There are violin and viola versions. This is so far just a small amount
of material (13 pages, or about half the length of a Suzuki book). The
material I had was mostly at an intermediate level, the kind of thing
that's fairly playable once you're comfortable in third position, and
are starting to work on your vibrato. The viola and violin versions are
produced automatically by the computer by transposition from the same
input file. It would be straightforward to do a cello version, but all
the fingerings would have to be different. This is a noncommercial
project, and everything can be freely copied, in the spirit of the
open source movement.
If others on this group can suggest more good public-domain material,
that would be great!
