??? relief C cut channel around top perimeter

by "Savy" <savy@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Sep 28, 2005 at 08:17 AM

I've noticed that Bob Taylor has registered a US patent for what would
seem to be an alternative (and easier) method of achieving the effect
of graduating (thinning) guitar tops along the parimeter edges to make
the top more responsive. A narrow "C" shape channel is cut 1/2 depth
into the underside of the top just inside it's perimeter edge where
joined to the sides and runs all along the lower bout ending near the
waist. An added benifit is claimed that the relief cut can also absorb
expansion and contraction stresses due to humidity thus maintaining the
top's shape.

Does anyone have thoughts on how this might differ in the role of
enhancing tone or volume as compared to the more traditional method.
(Imagine a generally uniformly thick top made lighter by having the
ability to move more but retain it's stiffness as compared to that with
a thinned edge)

Any Feedback ?
thanks, Savy
