I've enhanced MidiMapper quite a bit recently.
MidiMapper is a free virtual piano, guitar/banjo/mandolin etc,
hammered dulcimer simulator and composer software that lets you write
and play back songs thru midi and see the notes played (animated) on a
musical staff and scale, piano keyboard, guitar/banjo/mandolin, and
hammered dulcimer images. You can also define additional fretted or
fretless musical instrument layouts, for example, violin, mountain
dulcimer, etc. You can change the midi sounds to any of 128 different
instruments, and also record the output to .mid files.
Recently, the program was improved to sup****t up to 16 channels, each
channel assigned to a different instrument, if desired.
The song file syntax is simpler and easier to learn than ABC,
MusicXML, or Lilypond, and can be used to enter most, if not all,
western music exactly as it appears in the original score.
You can find out more and download it here:

That's a free web host and they limit the bandwidth available to me,
so if you have trouble downloading the program, here's an alternate
link to the program and docs download only:
