Gadgets Trump Content in Music

by "Tom Hendricks / Musea" <tom-hendricks@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Jul 15, 2008 at 08:31 AM

This is Musea E-mail Club Message #435

First the new videos I made this week. The first is a short rant
about how we could end poverty in the US with the money we've spent on
the war. The next is a music video. And the last is a poem video. All
are very short and can be accessed at Hunkasaurus.com or youtube.com
or myspace.com/musead (I welcome friends)
41. PENNY RATTLES IN A BANK: Penny Rattling in a Bank video about a
better way to spend the 500 + billion dollars we have spent on the
Iraq War.
42. JUST FRIENDS: Music video featuring the art work "Masks" and
music, "Just Friends".
43. THE HORSEMAN: Poem video of "The Horseman with sound effects.

Gadgets Trump Content.
There seems to me to be a trend in these times, in the arts that
favors gadgetry over content.
We surf the net for sites with the gadgets and quirky stuff, more than
sites for research or study. Video games are fun for their gizmos not
for profound content. Youtube is not great art but it is fun to see so
many short films. Music is fun on the net because you can sample new
music on myspace.com , videos on youtube, songs on itunes, and even
thousands of radio stations on live365.com, etc. It's the ability to
play so much new music that counts - not its content. If you're like
me you sample this and that and then move on.
If you went to a film this summer you probably went for the special
effects not the content. And no one is texting messages of great
im****tance.
Even the mainstream media art coverage is often more about what's the
latest gadget than what is the latest great art.
We are in a phase of fascination with gadgetry. Content is taking a
backseat. Gizmos are trumping talent.
BUT
I see this as a passing phase. Soon we will tire of the fla****ness and
want more content - more depth to the art - more passion. And that
comes with spending more time with those who are doing great things.
It takes more than a quick click of a mouse, to understand new great
art and an innovative new artist.
So in the future I see a golden age of arts, a time when the best of
this gizmo era rises to the top.
And because the internet is fla****ng all over the world, the next
golden age of art will be the first worldwide golden age of art.
Gadgets win now. But they are paving the way for the first golden age
of arts!
Stay tuned.
