There are some neat ways of driving a string that don't add mass to
the top, but the trouble is you can only really get the string to push
on the top at the string's resonant pitch. It might be possible to ig
up something that would drive all of the strings on a steel string at
the same time, and then just capo the thing up avery day until you've
hit all the notes. The simplest way I know involves putting a current
through the string, so you're dort of out of luck on the trebles of a
classical.
