Re: Misleading Voice Leading

One way to get around this problem of voicing melodies is to start with a
very simple approach.

Left hand plays the root
Right plays the melody in a medium to low register.
Learn this and memorise the tune all the way through. 2 Parts ONLY.
When you're confident take the next step.

Look at your thumbs.

Use them to get to the other notes that help define the chord.
For example, play Satin Doll and use your thums to play the 3rd and 7ths
of
the chords in their most naturally easy (and voice-lead) way.
Sometimes the 2 other notes are best played in one hand, it depends on
where
your hands are and what you can reach,....use your ears!
This method is very effective and is a great way to learn open voicing
because every melody is a new puzzle to solve.
It's like solving a four letter crossword puzzle, you're given 2 letters,
(the root and the melody) and the chord name helps define the other 2
possible letters.

It's a process that all pianist use whether consiously or not.
