I realise that in the USA you can get very hot under the collar about this

sort of thing, for good historical reasons, but I think we can be grown up

enough to accept it as the obviously intended metaphor, without accusing 
people of racism.  My friends (both black and white) would smile at that.

And racially divisive slurs in jazz go a long way further back than that. 
All the way back to the ODJB.
