If the music is hitting you right you just get it, don't need to know the
songs. Yes it does help to know the performer and his tendencies. I saw
WSP 3 Pack in Oakland this fall, and knew what 3 songs in 3 nights, and
had
a religious experience, but of course I know Herring from the Col., and
he's
just so perfect for Panic. Plus I know early Panic-Wrangler and so on.
As for Mike, I bit, got Paradise Tickets. The problem Mike has is it's
tough to lead a show on bass unless you are John Ent. or Les, but Mike is
up
there. His voice is underrated.
Ps After going to the show and listening to it now about 7 times, yes the
direction, focus, tightness of the jams led to a great Trey show, but his
voice is better than ever. He actually can consistenetly sing a ballad
now,
and not have his voice crack. He's learning to sing with soul. He had
had
life too easy, now he has that experience that has given him the raw
emotion
to wail vocally. He'll never be Ray Charles, but it's night and day from
Volt whatever. The new new stuff has something the new ****ne stuff lacks,
tough to put a finger on it, but the choruses seem more logical, less
predictable, but at the same time not out of place. Clapton has to be a
help. That second set was pretty darn fun. And Alaska rules, close your
eyes and Lowell George is there. And finally the jams will always be
there.
Anyway psyched for Mike, but am in no real rush to see Phish again, yes it
will be great, but I want to see what Trey can do sober solo.
Unfortunately, that kind of leaves Page and Fish ****ed, as Page's solo
stuff-no comment. So OK, Phish tour in a summer or two, but not as many
dates, and the best venues, and more Europe, Japan, etc. Sorry I'm older,
not my fault Cobain was right, and all younger kids are into now is video
games and soon virtual reality. And if you say not so, there are many
young
great bands, all the power to you, not my generation, probably yours, so
tour with them. The last thing Trey needs right now is the pressure of a
drugged to the hilt scene. Not saying that scene does not need to exist,
but some band needs to grab the torch and run. Give Phish a break. Of
course just one man's trash-err opinion.
