JULY 20 1940
Billboard magazine publishes its first listing of best-selling
singles. Ten tunes were listed. At the top of the list is the splendid
"I'll Never Smile Again", recorded by the Tommy Dorsey Band with
vocals by the young Frank Sinatra backed by the Pied Pipers (featuring
an even younger Jo Stafford)
JULY 20 1954
The Blue Moon Boys make their live debut this day----playing off a
flatbed truck outside a new drug store in Memphis. The band line up is
Elvis Presley, Scotty Moore and Bill Black.

Teresa Brewer guest hosts tonight's "Ed Sullivan Show"

Sonny James guests on "American Bandstand"
Ed Wood's notorious "Plan 9 From Outer Space" premieres this day

At United Recording Cor****ation in Hollywood Ricky Nelson records a
new Imperial single "Everlovin' " and "A Wonder Like You". "Today's
Teardrops" from this session appears on the LP "Album Seven By Rick"
in 1962 and finally makes it to 45RPM in 1963 (after Imperial joins
the Liberty camp)
In London the show "Stop the World I Want to Get Off" opens this day
starring (and written by) Anthony Newley.The show gives the world the
songs "What Kind Of Fool Am I" and "Gonna Build A Mountain" .The
following year (1962) the hit show will transfer successfully to
Broadway in New York
The Beatles sign a German recording contract with producer Bert
Kaempfert, under the name of The Beat Brothers
Gladys Knight & The Pips sing "Every Beat Of My Heart" on "American
Bandstand"

Johnny Tillotson hosts "American Bandstand" for the day (for a
vacationing Clark) and performs "It Keeps Right On A-Hurtin'"

On the Billboard pop charts Jan & Dean score #1 with "Surf City"
knocking "Easier Said Than Done" by The Es*** from pole position
However in the R&B chart the latter number now takes the #1
slot,replacing Barbara Lewis and "Hello Stranger"
Elsewhere this day Easy Listening King Ray Conniff receives two
gold-record awards -- for the albums "Concert in Rhythm"and "Memories
are Made of This" from Columbia Records. Conniff is responsible for
dozens of albums of easy listening music for the label.
