JULY 21 1942

Louis Jordan records "What's The Use Of Getting Sober (When You Gonna
Get Drunk Again)" and "Five Guys Named Moe" for Decca Records

JULY 21 1943

One of the most successful all-black movie musicals ever made "Stormy
Weather" starring Lena Horne, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, Cab Calloway,
and Fats Waller opens in Harlem this day

JULY 21 1951

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People
protests the TV version of "Amos 'n' Andy" and demand it be withdrawn
from the airwaves.. The NAACP calls it 'a gross libel on the Negro and
distortion of the truth'

JULY 21 1956

In the UK chart Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers knock Pat Boone off the
top spot ("I'll Be Home") when "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" becomes the
first of only two* American R&B vocal group records ever to make #1 in
Britain (the other will be The Marcels' "Blue Moon" in 1961)

(* its three if you stretch R&B to include the Platters' "Smoke Gets
In Your Eyes")

Meanwhile 3,000 miles away Johnny Cash's "I Walk The Line," becomes
his first #1 when it becomes the best selling C&W record on the
Billboard chart

JULY 21 1957

The Four Aces and Connee Boswell guest on "The Ed Sullivan Show"

JULY 21 1958

Elvis single handedly saves America this day----by ending the reign of
the dreaded Purple People Eater at #1 when "Hard Headed Woman" takes
over the top spot

Elsewhere the last "Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts" program airs on
CBS-TV this day.Many artists got a start up shot in their careers on
"Talent Scouts"  including Tony Bennett, Pat Boone,The McGuire Sisters
and a singer named Connie Francis - who not only sang, but played the
accordion, as well. 

Dale Hawkins sings "La-Do-Dada" on "American Bandstand". The DeJohn
Sisters also feature

Eddie Heywood guests on "American Bandstand"

JULY 21 1960

Jsck Scott (with the Chantones) records "Joshua Fit The Battle Of
Jericho" for his third Top Rank album "The Spirit Moves Me" (RS 648).
The other song recorded that day at Bell Sound in NYC is "Take My Hand
Precious Lord", which will remain unissued until the Bear Family
boxset

Ray Smith sings "Rockin' Little Angel" on "American Bandstand"

JULY 21 1961

In a two day session in Nashville commencing this day Clyde McPhatter
records 14 tracks for Mercury including the single "Same Time, Same
Place"/"Your Second Choice" and the LP "Golden Blues Hits" with the
tracks "Honey Hush","The Bells","What Am I Living For","The Clock",
"Fever","What'd I Say","C.C. Rider","Rockin' In My Heart","Kansas
City","I'm Gonna Be A Wheel Someday","Honest I Do" and "Blues Stay
Away From Me"

Gene Pitney sings "Every Breath I Take" on "American Bandstand"

JULY 21 1962

Frank Ifield ends Ray Charles' short tenure at the top of the British
chart when "I Remember You" replaces "I Can't Stop Loving You" at #1
----where it will remain for 8 straight weeks
