What Johnny Cash famously referred to as "the most im****tant recording
sessions ever held in Country Music history" begin today as Ralph
Peer's historic Bristol sessions commence at 8:30 AM----kicking off
with Ernest Stoneman,Kahle Brewer, and Ralph Mooney, recording "Tell
Mother I Love Her," and "Dying Girl's Farewell."

Capitol Records' first Top 10 hit is released this day----"Cow Cow
Boogie" by Freddie Slack & His Orchestra with vocal from Ella Mae
Morse will put the new company on the map
JULY 25 1946
Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis stage their first show as a team this
night.... at Club 500 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The two met while
performing - separately - at the Glass Hat in New York City and
decided to try an ad-lib act together. The duo went from earning $350
a week to pocketing $5,000 a week in just under eight months.

Columbia Records fire the starting pistol on a new long C&W singing
career this day as Lefty Frizzell undertakes his first recording
session for the label

One of the greatest ever R&B records of the 50's----"Have Mercy Baby"
by The Dominoes finally has its reign as #1 R&B record on the
Billboard charted ended.Taking its place is another of the greatest
ever R&B records of the decade---Billboard's new #1 R&B hit is "Lawdy
Miss Clawdy" by Lloyd Price
Elsewhere the Western cinema classic "High Noon" starring Gary Cooper
and newcomer actress Grace Kelly, premieres in New York City on this
date. Cooper later receives the Academy Award for Best Actor, and the
film also wins for Best Film Editing and two Best Music Awards: one
for Best Song (amongst the greatest and most memorable movie theme
songs in history) and the other for Best Scoring

Ed Sullivan's "Toast Of The Town" show this night is given over to a
"Tops in Blues" Air Force talent show, broadcast from Mitchel Field
in Uniondale, New York with performers selected from U.S. Air Force
bases throughout the world.

In Los Angeles Amos Milburn records his next two singles for
Aladdin---"All Is Well"/"My Happiness Depends On You" and "House
Party"/"I Guess I'll Go"
Meantime Piano Red has two sessions on this day---all eight tracks see
release---"Goodbye"/"Six O'Clock Bounce","Gordy's Rock"/"Red's Blues"
plus "Jumpin' With Daddy" all on the Groove label. "Peachtree Parade"
appears on RCA in 1957 whilst the other two tracks, "Real Good Thing"
and "Please Tell Me Baby" end up on different Groove EPs
In New York City The Sparks Of Rhythm record two singles--"Don't
Love You Anymore"/"Woman, Woman, Woman" and "Hurry Home"/
"Stars Are In the Sky" The lead singer on all four tracks is a guy
named Jimmy Jones

En route back to New York City Mike Stoller survives the collision in
the Atlantic this of the Italian luxury liner "Andrea Doria" with the
MV "Stockholm" (the "Andria Doria" capsizes and eventually sinks) that
kills 51 persons (the movie star Ruth Roman is another survivor of the
disaster).After his rescue and on his safe return to New York City an
agitated Jerry Leiber awaits him on the dock---not just with worry
about the accident but also with the exciting news that their song
"Hound Dog" has been newly recorded and is about to zoom up the
charts in a new version by this hotter than hot new kid Elvis Presley
Elsewhere this day,Little Willie John is dethroned at #1 in the
Billboard R&B chart as Little Richard assumes the top position with
his double sided "Rip It Up"/"Ready Teddy"

Bill Haley & His Comets have their only session for the Gone label in
New York City resulting in two singles : "Spanish Twist"/"My Kind Of
Woman" and the instrumental "Riviera"/"War Paint"
Earl King in New Orleans records "You Better Know" and "Mama and Papa"
for his next single on Imperial.Also recorded are "It's Wrong" and
"Case Of Love", which will remain in the can for over four decades
until "The Complete Imperial Recordings" in 2003

At Capitol Tower in Hollywood Bobby Darin records a massive 37 titles

This day an Air France Concorde en route to New York crashes shortly
after takeoff near Paris killing all 109 passengers and crew as well
as four people on the ground. By coincidence this writer is in the air
himself at the time of the accident---also en route to New York (but
from London) ---and only learns of the disaster on arrival at JFK
