JULY 28 1931

The US Congress today declares "The Star-Spangled Banner" the official
national anthem of the United States of America.The song was inspired
by "The Battle Of Fort McHenry",an episode in the war of 1812 fought
by the USA against a nation whose name tem****arily escapes me :) 

JULY 28 1933

The singing telegram is introduced this day. The first person to
receive a singing telegram is singer Rudy Vallee, in honour of his
32nd birthday (see above)

JULY 28 1939

One of the most famous songs of the 20th Century is recorded this day
as Judy Garland,along with Victor Young & His Orchestra,records "Over
The Rainbow". The tune from the movie "The Wizard Of Oz" will be
forever associated with Garland and will become her signature song 

JULY 28 1951

Rosemary Clooney knocks Nat Cole and "Too Young" from the #1 spot this
day---when "Come On-A My House" becomes the new #1 American best
selling single

Disney's "Alice In Wonderland" feature length cartoon is released this
day

JULY 28 1954

The first ever press interview with 19-year-old Elvis Presley is
published this day in the 'Memphis Press- Scimitar'

JULY 28 1955

At the Jim Beck Studio in Dallas,supervised by Don Law,Sid King & The
Five Strings undertake their second recording session for Columbia
which produces two singles---"Sag,Drag And Fall"/"But I Don't Care"
and "Purr,Kitty Purr"/"Mama I Want You"

JULY 28 1956

Gene Vincent makes his TV debut this day----on "The Perry Como Show"

Meantime in the Billboard chart Elvis wrests the #1 position back from
Gogi Grant when "I Want You,I Need You,I Love You" takes top honors

JULY 28 1957

Jerry Lee Lewis makes his national TV debut appearing on "The Steve
Allen Show" where he performs  "Whole Lot Of Shakin' Going On"

The Crew Cuts sing "My Blue Heaven" on "The Ed Sullivan Show. Roger
Williams and Toni Arden also guest

JULY 28 1958

An overdub session is held at Master Recorders in Los Angeles. Duane
Eddy's name will appear on the label of "Ramrod"/"The Walker" (Jamie
1109), though the contribution of Al Casey is far more substantial.
"Ramrod" had originally been recorded in July 1957 and issued on Ford
500, without the sax of Plas Johnson and the rebel yells of the Sharps
that were overdubbed on this day. The backing track for Al Casey's
"She Gotta Shake" (Liberty 55117) was overdubbed to produce "The
Walker".

JULY 28 1959

Ray Vernon (Link Wray's brother) guests on "American Bandstand"

JULY 28 1960

The Isley Brothers have their last session for RCA in New York City
resulting in the single  "Tell Me Who"/"Say You Love Me Too"

Dee Clark sings "You're Looking Good" on "American Bandstand"

JULY 28 1962

Dick Clark hosts an afternoon concert as part of the first annual
International Sound Fair at Cobo Hall in Detroit.
