Frank Sinatra begins his last recording sessions with the Tommy Dorsey
Orchestra for RCA this day. One of his last sides recorded is the
future #1 hit "There are Such Things". Sinatra subsequently moves on
to Columbia Records as a solo singing sensation

Perry Como finally ends the long run of "Riders In The Sky" by Vaughn
Monroe at #1 when his "Some Enchanted Evening" song from the stage
musical "South Pacific" becomes America's new #1 best selling record
JULY 30 1954
Elvis Presley makes his first full paid stage appearance at the
Overton Park Shell in Memphis.He is featured on a bill topped by Slim
Whitman

Backed by Luther Perkins and Marshall Grant,Johnny Cash this day cuts
the classic "Folsom Prison Blues" for Sun Records in Memphis Tennessee
Also recorded at this session are "So Doggone Lonesome","Luther Played
The Boogie" and "Mean Eyed Cat"
Meanwhile across the Atlantic the same Slim Whitman mentioned above
(see 1954) makes it to #1 in the UK charts with a record that will
hold the position for no less than 11 straight weeks---when his "Rose
Marie" dethrones Alma Cogan's "Dreamboat" as the new British chart
topper

Decca Records this day.Produced by Paul Cohen seven songs go into the
can - "Jambalaya" and "Bigelow 6-200" that will be selected as the two
sides of her debut single plus "Some People","Your Cheatin' Heart",
"I'm Gonna Lasso Santa Claus","Doodle Bug Rag" and "Christy Christmas"

Ruth Brown is in the Atlantic Studios in New York City. Her next
single will be "This Little Girl's Gone Rockin'" (co-written by Bobby
Darin) / "Why Me" (Atlantic 1197). "I Haven't Met" from the
same session remains unissued.

Ex-Blue Cap Tommy Facenda records "High School USA" in New York City.
This is in fact a re-recording of an earlier version produced by Frank
Guida in Norfolk, Virginia. On this new version gaps were left in the
tape where the names of local high schools could be dropped in. 28
versions were mastered (Atlantic 51-78), one for each state in which
the record was likely to be played.
