On this day The American Federation of Musicians go on strike.
According to union president James C. Petrillo, phonograph records are
"a threat to members jobs." Musicians refuse to perform in recording
sessions, but are allowed to perform live. The ban will last for more
than two years. It ends when the major labels agreed to pay the union
a royalty for all records released.
