AUGUST 1 1927

Ralph Peer signed both Jimmie Rodgers anmd The Carter Family to RCA
recording contracts this day

AUGUST 1 1939

Glenn Miller records "In the Mood" the number that will later become
his signature tune

AUGUST 1 1942

On this day The American Federation of Musicians go on strike.
According to union president James C. Petrillo, phonograph records are
"a threat to members jobs." Musicians refuse to perform in recording
sessions, but are allowed to perform live. The ban will last for more
than two years. It ends when the major labels agreed to pay the union
a royalty for all records released.

AUGUST 1 1954

The Ames Brothers and Polly Bergen guest on Ed Sullivan's "Toast Of
The Town" show

AUGUST 1 1955

Sun Records in Memphis release a batch of new singles this
day---included among them are "Mystery Train" by Elvis Presley (Sun
223) and "Gone,Gone,Gone" by Carl Perkins (Sun 224)

AUGUST 1 1958

Although he'd already held his first recording session for the company
August 1 1958 marked the day Johnny Cash officially signed for
Columbia Records

AUGUST 1 1959

Jackie Wilson sings "I'll Be Satisfied" on Dick Clark's Saturday Night
Beechnut TV Show. Other guests are Bill Haley & His Comets ("Rock
Around The Clock"),Lou Monte ("Have Another"),Jimmy Clanton ("My Own
True Love") and Santo & Johnny ("Sleep Walk")

In the British charts Cliff Richard scores the first of many #1 hits
when his "Living Doll" knocks Bobby Darin's "Dream Lover" from the UK
#1 spot

AUGUST 1 1960

In the Billboard charts Chubby Checker's "The Twist" debuts on the Hot
100 for the first time

Elsewhere a virtually unknown femme vocalist named Aretha Franklin
records her first ever non-gospel session for Columbia Records this
day,that will yield the single "Today I Sing the Blues"

AUGUST 1 1961

In Philadelphia Danny & The Juniors cut "Back To The Hop" and "The
Charleston Fish" as their new Swan single. Also recorded are "Just
Because", "Your Hair's Too Long" and "Some Kind Of Nut" 

AUGUST 1 1962

At Audio Recorders in Phoenix,Arizona Duane Eddy records
"Twangsville", which appears on the RCA LP of the same
name in 1965

Chubby Checker opens at the Sands in Las Vegas

AUGUST 1 1963

In Britain the first 'Beatles Monthly' is published. A magazine
devoted to the group, it will continue until 1969----at it's peak ot
will sell 350,000 copies a month

The Dovells sing "Betty In Bermudas" on "American Bandstand"

 AUGUST 1 1973

The film "American Graffiti" opens this day
