Tennessee. He sings "Sleep Baby Sleep" and "Soldier's Sweetheart"

AUGUST 4 1956

The Platters depose Elvis at the top of the US charts when "My Prayer"
replaces "I Want You,I Need You,I Love You" as the new #1 best selling
single

Elsewhere this day George Jones joins the Grand Ole Opry

AUGUST 4 1957

In what must have been an especially memorable "Ed Sullivan Show"
---guest hosted by Dan Dailey this night-----The Everly Brothers sing
"Bye Bye Love" and "Hey Doll Baby" whilst Frankie Lymon also guests
singing "Goody Goody". The Kirby Stone Four also guest while the icing
on the cake is an appearance by Jayne Mansfield

Meanwhile this day,down in Memphis Johnny Cash undertakes a recording
session for Sun that sees "Leave That Junk Alone","Country Boy","Doin'
My Time","If The Good Lord's Willing","I Heard That Lonesome Whistle"
"Remember Me" and "I Was There When It Happened" put in the can

AUGUST 4 1958

The American music weekly "Billboard" debuts its HOT HUNDRED chart.
Ricky Nelson has the honor of having the first #1 on the new chart
when "Poor Little Fool" goes to #1 this day replacing Elvis' "Hard
Headed Woman" as the nations new best seller

Elsewhere the Dumont TV Network finally crumbles this day

Johnny Garner sings "The Yellow Rose Of Texas" on "American Bandstand"

Part 2" sits at the top of the Billboard R& B chart

Kate Smith and Joya Sherrill guest on "The Ed Sullivan Show". Wonder

In Britain there is great excitement when leading local music weekly
NME re****ts that local group The Beatles may possibly score a Top 100
