AUGUST 7 1937

One of the classics of the Swing Era is recorded this day when Bunny
Berigan & His Orchestra wax "I Can't Get Started" for Victor

AUGUST 7 1948

Hank Williams joins the Louisiana Hayride this day---after six months
of proving to management that he could stay sober.

AUGUST 7 1954

Billboard reviews the very first record release by an aspiring new
young singer this day with this wite up in their country & western
section :- "Presley is a potent new chanter who can sock over a tune
for either the country or the r. & b. markets. On this new disk he
comes thru with a solid performance on an r. & b.-type tune and then
on the flip side does another fine job with a country ditty. A strong
new talent." (Billboard reviewing "That's All Right"/"Blue Moon Of
Kentucky" by Elvis Presley on Sun 209)

Meanwhile on the national Billboard charts The Crew Cuts steal the #1
spot from Kitty Kallen ("Little Things Mean A Lot") when they take
their pop cover of the Chords' "Sh-Boom" to #1 on the best sellers
list (becoming the fastest act to date to make it to #1--accompli****ng
the feat in just three weeks.A record that will stand until the rise
to fame of Elvis) 

Also on this day Ferlin Husky joins the Grand Ole Opry

AUGUST 7 1955

In his show broadcast this night from the American Shakespeare
Festival Theater in Stratford, Connecticut Ed Sullivan introduces Bill
Haley & His Comets who play "Rock Around The Clock". Other musical
guests are Mindy Carson and Britain's own Max Bygraves

AUGUST 7 1957

Paul Anka makes his TV debut on "American Bandstand" this day singing
"Diana"

Meantime an ocean away in the UK  The Quarry Men make their debut at
Liverpool's Cavern Club without Paul McCartney who was away on a Scout
trip

AUGUST 7 1958

After what seems an eternity of trying for a huge solo hit Atlantic's
persistence finally pays off this day as Clyde McPhatter records "A
Lover's Question" and the flip "I Can't Stand Up Alone".His version of
"Lovey Dovey" is also recorded at this session and filed away for
future use

Dion & The Belmonts ("No One Knows") and the Poni-Tails ("Born Too
Late") guest on "American Bandstand"

AUGUST 7 1959

In Chicago,Jimmy Reed records the classic "Baby What You Want Me To
Do" that will become a Vee Jay single as will "Going By The River"

Dave "Baby" Cortez along with Skip & Flip (with "It Was I") guest on
"American Bandstand"

AUGUST 7 1960

Jackie Wilson's "A Woman,A Lover,A Friend" becomes the new Billboard
#1 R&B record this day,replacing Dinah Wa****ngton and "This Bitter
Earth" in the top spot

Earl Grant guests on "The Ed Sullivan Show"

AUGUST 7 1961

Patsy Cline's "I Fall To Pieces" becomes the new #1 C&W single this
day

The Jarmels sing "A Little Bit Of Soap" on "American Bandstand"

In Cincinnati, Charles Brown records six tracks for the King LP
"Charles Brown Sings Christmas Songs"

AUGUST 7 1962

Neil Sedaka arrives in Britain to promote "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do"

The movie "Beach Party" with Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello
opens this day

Jo Ann Campbell guest hosts "American Bandstand"

A federal appeals court in New York rules that two former members of
Frankie Lymon and The Teenagers have waited too long to claim that
they were cowriters of the group’s legendary 1956 hit "Why Do Fools
Fall in Love". A previous court ruling had cleared the way for
royalties to go to Jimmy Merchant and Herman Santiago for writing the
song with lead singer Frankie Lymon (he died of a overdose of heroin
on Feb 28, 1968).
