"Best song of the Psychedelic era?" I certainly wouldn't go that far.
Psychotic Reaction is a good ride, but a better one, I believe-- within
the
subgenre of groups with numbers in their names--is The Bedlam Four's
Garage
Rock classic, Hydrogen Atom (Or Mushrooms Are In) from 1967.
There are so many contenders for the honor of "best" psychedelic, or at
least quasi-psychedelic record that I'd have to sit down and sort them out
for quite a spell before I could arrive at a satisfactory conclusion. If
you're talking strictly about US Billboard Top 40, I'd have to say that
"Eight Miles High" and Love's "Seven And Seven Is" start out as strong
qualifiers. And, if you want to expand the list of contenders to the Top
100
and beyond...well, then, you've got a veritable avalanche of psychedelic
tunes to consider.
By the way, a good online source for running down the titles of
Psychedelic
records from the 60s is the site "60's Punk, Garage, Beat and Psychedelia"
