Let's turn the time back, about 38 years and step into the studio while
The Guess Who is recording their biggest hit, "American Woman". From the
snippet below, you'd think it's probably Take #2. But if you guessed
that, you're way off! This is, not Take #8, nor Take #15, it's Take
#25!! As we can hear, they are FAR away from anything that remotely
sounds like a hit! Between ***mings', boring, monotone singing, and
Bachman's less than impressive guitar work, it's doomed for failure!
About the only one who has their act together is the drummer, Gary! It
probably wasn't until an adult stepped in and set them straight with a
hit sound advice!...

Now, let's go back another year and listen to the beginning of this
song, "These Eyes". We hear some studio talk in the beginning, as they
patiently await for the prerecorded keyboard to start! I'm not sure who
wrote the song, but I can see ***mings' composing it on a keyboard. Then
they all joined in to add a bit more to this prerecorded keyboard
track!...

Were The Guess Who great? No, they didn't have any clue what their best
selling/charting song would sound like, other than written lyrics,
before stepping into a recording studio!
