You need a chromatic harp to play G Bb C Db D F (a blues scale - but see 
below).

No. You play cross harp. If the key is G, you play a C harp. This will
give 
you the notes G A B C D E F.

On a Blues Harp, the reeds are designed for bendin, and you can draw
harder 
on the B and the D to give you:

G A Bb (B) C Db (D) E F and get much closer to a blues scale than on a
plain 
diatonic harp. Obviously, this is what blues harpists actually use.

Blues harpists typically play one harmonica throughout the song, so in 
essence, they're playing G mixolydian (G A B C D E F) over all three
chords. 
Since it's a diatonic harp, you can't make too many alterations.
