Scanning through what I'm supposed to be playing with dr Jazz and the
Cheshre Cats on Saturday night at a wedding reception, I see that our
chanteur, Peter, will be doing a couple (from the Sinatra repertoire, I
think) and at least two

River Stay Away From My Door
You Make me Feel So Young

modulate up a semi tone. I think these are reasonably authentic charts,

and so I imagine that the originals did this.

Modulating up a semitone is of course much better than the worst artifice
of
a composer/arranger who has run out of ideas - modulating up a tone.
Apart
from one exception this is invariable dire. The exception is the one
about
waving chickens in the air from the Spitting Image team: that modulates up
a
tone very subtly in every verse, so after 6 verses you're singing an
octave
higher and wondering what's going on :-)
