Dylan, typically scale degrees are referred to with Arabic numerals 
(1,2,3...) instead of Roman Numerals (I, II, III...). RN are used for
chords 
typically.

So when people write out the notes for a scale, they will put:
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 (8)

So if there's an alteration to that, they'll note it:

1 2 b3 4 5 6 b7 (8) for example.

Since the minor pentatonic is:
1 b3 4 5 b7 (8)
(note, the 3 and 7 are flat compared to a Major scale, which is what most 
people use as a "reference point").

The Blues Scale (or at least one type) has an added note, #4 or b5, again,

compared to Major, so:

1 b3 4 b5 5 b7 (8).
