Triangle symbol (was What's the relation****p between scales and chords?)

Haven't seen much of the triangle lately - it was pretty common in the
'70s 
& 80's.

My question has always been whether the ^ represents the interval of a
major 
7th (my understanding) or whether it simply means major.  Some (freshmen) 
students used to write C^ when they meant C, E,G and others meant C,E,G,B.

Of course, C^7 is clear - but is the 7 superfluous here?
