It's very essential, as you'll realize once you understand it and
apply it to the music you are learning. The purpose? -- it's an
explanation of how the 12 tones are created by a series of 5th
intervals, and subsequently the creation of scales and chords using
those tones, and subsequently music using those scales and chords.

music theory books your library has. You'll decide if they are easy to
understand. I think they just need to be understandable! -- by being
well written and well organised. Good graphics help, too.
