This is simply not true. Who told you that?

It would be nice, but such things are too hard too categorize. The best 
thing to do is immerse yourself in the styles in which you're interested
by 
listening and learning to play them and you can then "internalize" the 
things that are common between styles, and the things that distinguish one

style from another.

And if you're trying to write a computer program like a "melody
generator", 
then you should also look at the many, many other attempts that have been 
made in that pursuit.
