I've noticed( i could be wrong) that when ever i see a multi-
instrumental band(horns, drums, flute, violin, cello, guitar, etc) the
music that is often played is some form of funk music, afro-beat, etc.
is this because that as a form, its easy to compose or jam within this
structure.
since funk music is usually modal, there is really one key to deal
with and actually since its modal only one or two chords to deal with,
hence its easier for everyone to improvise over.
1) only one key,
2) only one chord.
easier in terms of theory, freer in terms of being able to use many
different options yet staying in one key and not so much changes.
it seems to me that this is a form of music that is very practical
when a bunch of people with different instruments get together and
jams for fun. no sheets needed, not too many changes and no
modulation.
the sort of 'bring your instruments and let's jam at the beach' type
of thing.
