Ok boys and girls, something's puzzling me:
1. I know that musically and artistically, we can construct ANY chord we'd
like, so let's put that aside as a non-issue.
2. I'm looking up info on things like 9th chords and it seems that I'm
running into very little (or incorrect) information about these specifics,
so here goes:
M, m, o and + - pretty universal. m(#5) would end up being another M
chord
in first inversion, so it's a "duplicate".
Maj7, 7, m7, m7b5, o7 - standard diatonic.
But we also have the ability to raise and lower 5 and raise 7 in some
(let's
ignore sus4, other sus and add, and 6 chords for now) -
Maj7(#5), Maj7(b5), 7(#5), 7(b5)
mMaj7.
Now, if I take a m7 and do m7(#5) same problem as above - it creates - say
C
Eb G# Bb = Ab C Eb Bb - Abadd9/C. So I would say that's not a "typical"
alteration to perform on a m7 (or m) chord. Obviously if we do m7(b5) we
have m7b5, so no problem there.
So it appears that the 5th can be raised or lowered on 7 and Maj7 chords
(or
is it safe to say "chords with major thirds"?) but for minor 7 chords the
5th is not typically adjusted (creates 2 other already named chords), but
the 7th can be raised (mMaj7).
Correct?
Now, what about 9th chords?
9 (Dom 9) - we can alter that 5th and the 9th - 9, 7b9, 7#9, 7(b5 b9),
7(b5
#9), 7(#5 b9), 7(#5 #9)
That all seems ok - altered dominant.
What about:
Maj9 - Maj9 - OK
Maj7b9 - C E G B Db ?
Maj7#9 - C E G B D# ?
You see what I'm getting at?
How many altered forms of Maj9 are there (typically, or commonly again) -
are the 5th and the 9th frequently altered as in the dominant structures?
Are there some (any) that are common, or more common than others?
C E G# B D - CMaj9(#5). Of course that's simply E7/C as well. But is
CMaj9(#5) a happenin' thing? (well, happenin in that it occurs commonly,
not
that it sounds cool, which it does - I frequently play C+ to C+add9 when C
is a V+ chord to get a 5-6-1 melodic line - but what about adding the
Maj7th
in there too?).
Ditto with m9 forms.
Seems to me it should still hold logical that you can raise the 7 in a m9
to
form a mMaj7(9), or C Eb G B D.
(p.s. if this, or any other notation I'm using is funky, please feel free
to
correct).
But do we have m7(b9) - C Eb G Bb Db? (and I realize that #9 is impossible
in the minor family)
Ok, so there's another whole category.
Additionally, what about 9ths added to m7b5 or o7 forms?
C Eb Gb Bb D - Cm7b5(9) ??? or C Eb Gb Bb Db - Cm7(b5 b9) - or is it
simply
Ebm13/C (or Ebm/C)???
A link, or a list in response would be nice. And again I'm not looking for
every possibility, just the commonly used or "named" ones.
TIA,
Steve
